After breakfasting mid-morning at the Copp', the party wandered aimlessly about town. It was the first warm spring day and Hurricane Mountain Stream rushed noisily through town with the wave of snowmelt.
Ironica stayed back to confront Lanelle and Hagar. They told her to ask Rya if D'Luk was acting himself lately, and asked her to send their regards to Elgin, one of the Hibernal's Iceguard. They left, and Ironica trailed them as they walked in intricate loops around lower Old Weir, wasting time. She used her street knowledge to sidle up easily to Hagar at a crowded juncture before relieving him of a leather pouch at his waistband. It contained a around 15 gold pieces in assorted monies. He did not seem to notice. But someone else did--a fellow who called out to her in Thieves Cant to meet him for a drink inside the Copp'. She obliged, introduced himself as Darrow, and he told her he was impressed. She asked about sfos and he said he kept away from the stuff. They parted ways.
Meanwhile, Safad, Zireal, Rya, Dala'gse, Nancy, and Slothrop went shopping. The anxiety of proximal death will drive people to do that, it seems. They stopped by Bridge Street Smithy where they met Takkar Brown, a brawny half-orc woman. She took Nancy to the back for a fitting for the new Bulette skin hide armor. Dala'gse described the shield he was interested in from the beast's headplate and she told him she'd come up with something. Safad kept wandering in and out asking about a chain shirt, before finally buying one. More concerned with their gear than their lives, they asked about enchanting. Takkar told them look for Luduth the Enchanter who was fairly knowledgeable, at least for this side of the Gap of Lodun.
They then went back to Myrtle's where they found it was closed due to apocalyptic events. Rya took them to the Wizzenkoffmoggenockery home where an elf man who Rya knew as Daedor, Myrtle's husband, answered the door. Myrtle saw Rya and invited them all in. The group explained to an incredulous Myrtle and Daedor what was about to befall Old Weir. Daedor said tangling with a town of mind flayer thralls--let alone a colony of mind flayers--was nothing to joke about, they were a race of genius aberrations, evil to the core, and far smarter than they. If what they said was true, should they not all flee?
Myrtle was concerned about the provenance of all her goods--many in the past years coming from Lakeville. Had she supported the thralls in some way, and by extension a colony of mind flayers? They took Myrtle back to her shop and haggled her half to death in circles before settling on trading the red dragon scale for a ruby ioun stone. Apparently it was going to save the town. Myrtle was run down, terrified, and closed shop. She and Daedor were talking about packing up and fleeing.
Dala'gse met a druid of Silvanus (same as Bask!) named Bale Wood, outside of Old Weir's cabin, and asked about the large tree. He climbed it and looked around at the other temples around town and the signs and symbols on them:
The group decided they'd had enough of running around town and thought it best to carry on with their plan to capture and torture someone.
Zireael checked in with Deelon at GPS to lay out the plan. Deelon would invite the twins down to the armory to check out some of the more interesting weapons, at which point, Rya and the Misfit Six would spring their trap. Easy enough. The group got into place, setting up a weapons display, and waiting.
Meanwhile, out on the GPS practice yard, Deelon was doing his best to convince the twins to follow him to see their special weapons. The twins declined, saying they were on duty and could not step away to go see the weapon display. What's that about a weapon display? One of the dignitaries wondered. Oh, it's nothing really, Deelon tried to cover. No, no, don't be shy, we'd love to see it! The dignitaries encouraged. Magnus Swann (GPS boss) was also quite curious about this weapons display and tried to dissuade the group. Olin and Tufus must have thought it was demur modesty, and overrode their host. Deelon's stomach filled with dread as he led the group down the stairs to the "weapons display."
And suddenly a magical darkness covered the bottom of the stairwell. The guards were on alert. The dignitaries were excited. Deelon led them through, bravely, and as the group emerged, what they saw delighted and surprised them.
Multicolored lights were dancing about in various shapes and images, historic weapons of yore were floating about in the air, a deep, resonant violin played in the background. It was new, exciting, and spectacular. The group applauded when the show was over. Deelon almost vomited from the anxiety.
Nancy and Slothrop introduced the group and Nancy as the bard playing the Wandering Wolf later in the evening. They said they let Deelon in on the little surprise teaser for them, and he played his part admirably. Magnus was confused but saw his guests approved so relaxed a bit. Tufus was delighted at this provincial display of magic. How quaint! Olin commented the town was one surprise after another.
Zireael lingered behind to speak with Magnus after the tour. Magnus told him Tallin Gale from the Hibernal had been to see him and told him the Misfit Six came bearing news town was in grave danger. Zireael asked him to send rangers to scout the town's perimeter, and Magnus agreed.
Slothrop followed the party upstairs, in his getup as Hamson Wich, Weiran boy-next-door. He struck up a conversation with a few of the guards who were sniffing him out. He finally got through to Kip Tursus, a very polite half-orc from Innesbyr with blue dyed hair. Slothrop asked if he was interested in a drink at the Copp' later. Kip asked if they had darts there. Slothrop saw the glint in his eye and told him indeed they did, and he and his mate would love to challenge Kip and one of the others to a game. Kip explained they were on duty until later in the evening, but then he could sneak away for a bit.
He also managed to talk to Tufus who thought it a little beneath him that one of the entertainers would be chatting him up. Slothrop had enough of the fancy chatter and invited any and all for a true Weiran pint at the Badger Den. The twins looked to Kip who told them it was all right, but to only have one. They left for the Den with Slothrop who bought them two rounds and they swapped war stories. Seefus claimed he had once got shot at by a gnoll. Feesus said they killed a zhentarim mercenary once. They agreed to come back for darts if they could figure out their duties that evening.
Hamson Wich winked at Seefus and he blushed.
The group, meanwhile headed for the Hibernal den, through the bathhouse. They toweled off and found D'Luk plotting with some of his thieves guild companions. Rya was satisfied he was not a mind flayer thrall, and asked that he look into sfos trade and to see what news of anyone in and out of town.
Elgin was working on logistics of a defense for the town. Supplies, weapons, armor, etc. If an attack was imminent, shouldn't they prepare? The group said they were looking into this delegation and planning on "questioning" some of them. Seljin Len advised in his thick accent, "Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you." Safad told him his words were wise.
Seljin breathed deeply Dala'gse's matted wild fey hair, smiley furtively, and slipped an acorn into Dala'gse's pocket.
Prex buzzed the speaking stone to report the stone giants were restless and had taken up a boulder tossing competition. It was not very discreet. After some debate about instructing them to build a fort and stone giant agency, Zireael told Prex he would get back to him.
Nancy was on in an hour, the group left to prepare.

- A lit candle above an open eye (Deneir)
- A pair of eyes surrounded by seven stars (Selune)
- A face up coin (Tymora)
- A paw print with a five pointed star in the center (Gwaeron Windstrom)
- A unicorn’s head (Mielikki)
- A six-pointed snowflake (Auril)
But under his hands and bare feet, the oak tree felt firm and warm from the spring sun. It could have been the wind, but he thought he saw a bare branch sway closer to him. What happened next could not have been the wind, as he watched the hibernating bud expand as through breathing, and unfold before his eyes into a diminutive oak leaf, in a vibrant green.
