Coulain's Journal
The journal is tattered and worn with many musings and travel notes. Mother the Goblin claims the researcher disappeared some 25 years ago and all they recovered was the man's journal. The following excerpts are the most notable--and legible--passages.

Mythic Arms of the Vyshaantar Empire: Field Notes
by Bedouir Coulain
1497, Kythorn 05
A band of goblins in the area attempted to rob me for a toll across a bridge but were rather easily persuaded to let me pass and even proved hospitable to a weary traveler. They claimed to be manning their post, guarding against Hobgoblins, in what they called the Great Goblin War of the Greypeaks. I had heard something of those wars at a table at the Mootscarp but that was nigh a decade past! I told them the war was over but they didn't seem to believe me. I'm not sure they cared if it was true.
Their druid, Neervala, had quite the gift, something I hadn't seen in a goblin before, though I cannot claim to know many of their kind. She worshiped one of the Gods that came or fell during the Time of Troubles. I can't recall the name.
1497, Kythorn 12
Melarn claims the weapons--if they even existed--originated from somewhere in the southern Greypeaks and this key was found in a collection of the ancient artifactia and paraphernalia at the College. I can't say I mind researching these old myths but I'd have preferred to have been given a more Library-centric assignment. Books, I know. The wilds remain...a challenge! I hope I am equal to the task, but my confidence is wavering.
I've had a few run-ins with the native Stone Giants and fear I did not make a favorable impression. I thought it best to let them "cool off" a bit and have hunkered down in an abandoned mine I found.
1497, Kythorn 15
Praise Mystra I spent time learning more than just the basic sustenance spells. I was beginning to tire of Wizard's Bread after a few days cramped up here when I remembered my Heward's. I nearly tripped over the dipthongs like an initiate in my excitement to cast "Conjure Feast," and my mood has much improved.
1497, Kythorn 21
The mine goes deeper than whatever race, goblinoid by my surmising, more recently stripped the iron out of the walls. I've made a couple forays into the depths but thought it best for the effects of Heward's "Speed Fermentation" to wear off before delving deeper.
1497, Kythorn 29
The Archivist warned me against that damned spell when he taught it to me, but never did I think I'd be stuck in the Greypeaks, alone, hiding in a mine from Stone Giants! Speed fermentation, indeed. I admit I may have distracted myself sampling the terroir of different starches and sugars present in the local flora, for far too long. But enough! I saw my scruffy face in a pool of water the other day, had a shave and a "courtesan's bath", and promised no more Heward's! I will explore the depths this afternoon.
1497, Kythorn 30
When I thought I'd be lost if I took another step, I found something! I admit, I may have tapped my wineskin for courage, but I discovered a truly ancient door. Oh, the goblinoid races had done their worst but it was still locked tight. My metallurgy has atrophied but I believe it was cast from adamantium. The key I was given at the College does not fit in the lock but it is of very similar design. I've sketched both here. There may indeed be something to this myth after all!
1497, Flamerule 1
I decided to leave my mine after two tenday camped out there. Goodness. I'm skirting the edges of the Stone Giant territory--far as I can tell--and am searching for more of these doors.
1497, Flamerule 3
I discovered another mine, but this one was a simple iron mine, ramshackle and ruined.
The journal has no more entries.
